FAQ
Do I need to have any experience of plastering or bricklaying?
No previous experience is necessary. All of our plastering & bricklaying courses are designed to provide a good understanding in all areas of plastering & brick laying whether you are a total beginner or someone who has some DIY knowledge.
What do I need to bring with me?
Nothing. All the appropriate tools will be provided for use on your course. We use only professional quality tools (Marshalltown). We do keep in stock all the tools we use on the course should you wish to purchase from us whilst you are here at below the manufacturers RRP. If you already have your own trowel, you are welcome to bring it with you on the course and we can make sure it is prepared properly. We also provide tea/coffee throughout the day.
Once I have finished the course, will I be able to plaster or brick lay successfully?
The Plastering Workshop provides intensive courses to teach the basics of how to plaster & brick lay. Most students, having attended a course, will have sufficient knowledge to enable them to achieve a professional finish. This does not mean that a student will become fully proficient tradesman overnight, but with practice their speed will increase and they will have sufficient knowledge to be able to complete a variety of plastering and bricklaying jobs.
What happens if I have problems when I start plastering or bricklaying at home?
Students that immediately put into practice what they have learned are inclined to be more successful, however, we at The Plastering Workshop recognize this may not be possible for everyone so we also offer expert advice at the end of the course either by telephone or by e-mail.. Both plastering & bricklaying students will also receive a set of course note.
What is the main difference between the 1 day, 2 day and the 3 day plastering course?
The 2nd day allows students more time to put into practice what they have been taught and ensure the basics have been successfully mastered. The 3rd day teaches plasterboarding ‘dot & dab’ techniques & more skimming!
How often do you run the plastering & bricklaying courses?
The plastering & bricklaying courses are run every week. Dates for the next 6-8 weeks are shown on the ‘availability’ page. If you wish to book a course further ahead, please contact us by email or telephone to verify availability of dates.
How many students are on each course?
We, at the Plastering workshop, believe our students learn better when in small groups. By keeping the course numbers to a minimum, we are able to provide more individual attention throughout the course. However, we are able to teach larger groups (up to 10 plasterers) if required. Our maximum student / instructor ratio is 5/1 plastering & 4/1 brick laying although it is usually less than this.
How do I book a course?
Booking is simple. You can either check the ‘availability’ page for course dates (this is updated daily), then complete the online booking form if you wish to pay by credit card using our secure online payment page, or you can print off the booking form if you wish to pay by cheque (made payable to ‘The Building Workshop Ltd’), and post to The Plastering workshop, Unit 11, Sand Lane Business Park, Sand Lane, Sandy, Bedford, SG19 2DQ. Alternatively, you may book by calling 01767 683051 & we can take credit card details over the phone.
Are the bricklaying & plastering courses suitable for beginners?
Yes, absolutely! Our courses all start with the basics; we don’t presume knowledge on your part. Our instructors have many years experience in their relevant trades and will teach you best practice and the correct techniques.
Do you supply all the tools and materials I need to use on the course?
Yes, we supply all the equipment you need for your course, and we use the best tools and materials available.
What should I wear?
We recommend that you wear old clothes or overalls & sturdy footwear, you will get messy.
Where can I buy bricklaying & plastering tools?
You can buy most bricklaying and plastering tools from us. We only use professional quality trowels manufactured by Marshalltown on our courses and you can buy the same tools, from stock, at below the manufacturers RRP whilst you are on your course.
Am I expected to take my work apart at the end of the course?
Absolutely not. All your time with us is spent learning!
